Swatch Sundays: Sinful Colors Petal Be The Day

Hello Lovelies!

I've been looking for the Bloom Blast crellies for ages, I went through 4-5 walmarts before finding Petal Be The Day hiding on a back shelf by it's lonesome.
I had Color Club Pucci-Licious on my nails already, so I decided to do a layered swatch for you guys! I'll do a swatch of the crelly by itself next. Petal Be The Day is a super sheer lavender crelly with purple, teal, blue, and silver micro and hex glitters. This is one coat layered over my base, with topcoat.

Better lock it in your pocket, taking this one to the grave

Hello Lovelies!

I wore these nails ages ago to go with a 1920's inspired outfit, the nails that women actually wore in the 1920's were a bit too plain for my taste, so I went with this dusty golden design.
This started with a base of Sephora X Hypnotic and a thin coat of NYC Top of the Gold Top Coat. Then I stamped with Sinful Colors Black on Black and BM-701. Then finally I matted it to help the gold flakies really stand out!

How I made a classic lolita dress for under 20 bucks!

Hello Lovelies!

I decided to make a tutorial for the dress, but since I didn't actually take any process photos, I threw together (emphasis on the thrown together) some diagrams and I'll try to explain how this dress went down and how to re-create it if you are so inclined. Here's the full photo shoot of the dress if you missed it!

I made a classic Lolita dress!

Hello Lovelies!

I fell in love with Lolita fashion a couple months ago, specifically this dress. And no, it's not that kind of Lolita. Here's a great blog post that explains the confusing name. Lolita is a very feminine, with lots of ruffles, heavily Victorian influenced, and modest Japanese fashion. So basically, everything I love in dresses! There are tons of different styles of Lolita, but my favorite is classic Lolita. I have a whole pinterest board here if you want to see some of the gorgeous dresses I've found.

Anyways, I decided to take the plunge and try to draft a pattern for this dress. I originally was going to use this shirt pattern, and add on the skirt, but I sewed a test run and it failed horribly. So I threw that out the window, and made up my own. This was my first time completely making a pattern up on my own, and honestly I was so surprised it worked! I wrote out a rough tutorial on how I made the dress here.

But since it turned out so beautifully, I had to do a full out photo shoot in it!

Swatch Sundays: Sephora X Hypnotic

Hello Lovelies!

I've seen the Sephora X polish line floating around re-sale stores for quite a while, and I finally picked this one up, it's Sephora X Hypnotic! It's a super subtle duochrome shimmer, it shifts from a muddy mauve to a shimmery lavender. It has gorgeous flecks of gold glitters that I just love! The flecks don't show up very well here, but I matted these nails after snapping these pics for some nail art (that will be up on the blog soon), and they look amazing there.
This is two coats, and this has a pretty good shine to it topcoatless!

Pastel knitted stripes & BPS review

Hello Lovelies!

I've actually never gotten around to using sticker decals like these before if you'd believe it! I was sent a pack of these decals from BPS to review, and I had a bit of trial and error with them. The little pack came with two long strips, and then a set of "nail shaped" stickers, the kind you'd use for a full mani. The regular stickers were way too thin for my nails, the stickers meant for the ring, index, and middle fingers were just barely big enough for my pinkie nail.
I got creative and cut the two long strips into pieces just big enough for my nails, and came up with this design!

I started with a base of Maybelline Color Show Cool Canary with a thin coat of L.A Colors Color Craze Speckled. Speckled has a very unique mix of matte glitters that defy definition, so here's a bottle shot!

After letting my base dry completely I applied the stickers, they smoothed out very nicely without any fuss. I wore these nails for around five days, and the stickers never lifted or moved out of place! Here's their product page if ya wanna check them out, and if you ever order anything from Born Pretty, this code is good for 10% off your order: ALBK31

Blog makeover with nails to match!

Hello Lovelies!

I had gotten tired of my old blog layout so I embarked on an entire overhaul of the blog, and I'm loving my new look! I thought it would be fitting if my first post after the makeover had nails in the new color scheme! These were inspired by these nails, I started them off with a base of Color Club La Petite Mint-Sieur and then created a gradient with Wet n Wild Tickled Pink and a makeup sponge.

I used the same mint polish for the polka dots to give the illusion that they disappear as you go farther down the nail, and then I turned it matte with a Wet n Wild matte topcoat.

Thanks for visiting with me, and I'd love to hear what you think of the new blog design!

Sunday Swatches: Maybelline Color Show Cool Canary

Hello Lovelies!

Pastels are tricky creatures, I swear I've worn this polish before with just two coats, but when I swatched it today I was up to four and still patchy before I gave in. The flash in my pictures hides the patchy finish, in the shadows they're more apparent. But I love using pastels as a base in my nail art, so I put up with it because they're so pretty.
This is Maybelline Color Show Cool Canary, it's a bleached pastel yellow creme, and as I said above this is four stinkin' coats (no topcoat.)

In the springtime, the only pretty ring time

Hello Lovelies!

I wanted to keep L.A Colors Color Craze Spring Flirt on for a bit longer, so I used it as a base for these cute 3D nail decorations I received from Born Pretty! These are interesting little flowers, they're not hard plastic, they're actually rubber! They bend to your nail shape and once you place them on wet polish, they stay in place very nicely.
They came in a little round container, it's mostly a mix of flowers with a couple bows thrown in. I love the roses, I think the one on the tip of my thumb is pretty cute!
I used a matte topcoat over everything to really seal it on. Plus I think Spring Flirt is even prettier when matte.

Here's where you can find these on the BPS site, and if you want to get anything, use this code for 10% off! ALBK31

Sunday Swatches: L.A Colors Color Craze Spring Flirt

Hello Lovelies!

It seems like L.A Colors have really stepped up their game lately! Usually crellies from brands like this have horrible formulas, but I really love L.A Color's, I've been meaning to pull out Candy Sprinkles again for some animal cracker nail art, but since I'm the queen of procrastination that hasn't happened yet.
This is Spring Flirt, it's a pastel baby blue with aqua, dark blue, and pink hex/micro glitters. I used three coats (with topcoat), I could've gotten away with two, but I added another to get some more glitter onto my nails.
You don't have to chase the glitters around the bottle, I always hate it when I have to fish around for glitters since they got brushed off while I was getting my nails opaque with the base color.

There's gold in them thar nails!

Hello Lovelies!

I've had this color combo bouncing around in my head for awhile, and I finally got it out onto my nails! This started off with a base of China Glaze In a Lily Bit, and then I stamped a floral design with OPI French Quarter For Your Thoughts and BM-710. Then I added a thin coat of NYC Top of the Gold Top Coat, and finished it off with a shiny topcoat.
I wish my stamping had shown up stronger, when I added the gold flakies it smeared all over the place. But it still turned out pretty cute!

Thanks for stopping by!

Jason & the Argan Oil Review and How to Keep Lush Shampoo Bars From Crumbling

Hello Lovelies!

I discovered the awesomeness that is Lush a couple months ago, and this is the very first thing I bought, the Jason & The Argan Oil solid shampoo bar. It has an absolutely amazing scent that I love, they describe it as rose jam. Lush's website claims that these will hold up to 80 washes, so I decided to put this to the test and see if it came anywhere near that high benchmark.
I've been using this little guy for a couple months now, I lost track but I'm somewhere around 40 uses. About 25 in, it started to crumble horribly, and little pieces would get left behind in the container I kept it in every time I took it out. I looked it up to see if I had gotten a dud, but apparently most of Lush's shampoo bars crumble into bits, the best fix I could find was to re-shape it into a bar with cheesecloth, but I didn't think that would help for very long.
My mom used to make felted bar soaps (like these), so I figured why not try it out with this to salvage my shampoo bar?

So I put it into this wool knitted pouch, and let it do it's own thing in there. I don't know if it just kept crumbling in there, or if being pressed into the pouch made it keep it's shape, but whatever it did, it's working, I admit it's pretty funky looking, but hey it works! I have to lather it up to properly get my hair sudsed up, but  now I'll probably be able to get at least another ten washes out of it. And since this was a nearly ten dollar bar, I want to use up every last bit!
